Come on fellow bloggers, do spread the word and start reviewing!

WKD and Smirnoff Ice ads banned

20 10 2006

alcopos.jpg Two commercials for alcopops have become the first TV adverts to be banned last months by the advertising industry watchdog since rules came into force last year outlawing ads likely to encourage under-18s to drink. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled on Wednesday that the adverts for vodka-based WKD and Smirnoff Ice should not be broadcast again.

One of the banned WKD ads featured a manic shopkeeper wearing a T-shirt saying “I love my WKD side” while the other showed two men in a slow-motion race for the last WKD bottle in the fridge.

The Smirnoff Ice ads that fell foul of the rules featured characters called Uri and Gorb. In the first, Uri gave viewers a tour of his Arctic home while the second showed Uri and Gorb as guests on a chat show. The ASA said they were likely to become cult figures with strong appeal to under-18s.

Both the WKD and Smirnoff Ice adverts, it added, used juvenile humour likely to appeal strongly to adolescents.

WKD and Smirnoff Ice are manufactured by Diageo.

HSBC - The World’s local stalker

18 10 2006

If you watched the news last week, you might remember that HSBC was shamed over the suicide a student who was bombarded with letters and phone calls for a £1000 overdraft. After the news broke out, a number of people complained that HSBC was harassing them over their debts.

The total UK personal debt in September 2006 will have exceeded £1 ¼ trillion and somehow this figure does not surprise me; student debts, credit cards and mortgages all contribute to personal debt.

I therefore feel somewhat uncomfortable when I see ads like this…

Web 2.0 - Yahoo! Answers

17 10 2006

Web 2.0 has certainly changed the way we utilise and browse the WWW, however I have to disagree and do not understand the purpose of certain Web 2.0 applications.

Yahoo! Answers is a reasonably new social networking/online community/question answering service. The service allows any registered Yahoo user to ask just about any question and hopefully get an answer from another member of the question answering community. Yahoo! Answers, appears to be a definite extension of FUSE (Find, Use, Share, Expand) and Yahoo’s numerous efforts into online community building with services like Web 2.0 – think Yahoo 360 or Flickr.

Yahoo! Answers is built to on the company’s social search technology with a focus on answering day to day questions of a subjunctive nature (Where can I buy…, What’s a good show to see…, etc.) and organizing them into a more structured info base with the use of several features including categories. Its motto is: Ask-Answer-Discover. Yahoo Answers uses a point and level system to reward participants and help identify the most active users.

I spent the last week or so messing around with Yahoo! Answers features, and here’s my verdict:

The concept is interesting however Yahoo! focussed on quantity rather then quality. It can be useful to answer questions such as who sings that really cool tune that’s on the radio all the time, or the name of a movie.

I was however shocked to see that someone asked how she could get revenge on her cheating husband! Surely this sort of question shouldn’t be allowed!  Another major drawback of Yahoo! Answers is the reliability and useless quantity of the answers given for each question – I’d much rather stick to Wikipedia! This may sound terribly harsh, but I think that Yahoo! Answers is a waste of space on the WWW…

Bloggers’ chance to make history

16 10 2006

Tomorrow might be just another day for most of us but it will become a lasting piece of history on the Net. Computer users are invited to upload their diaries, which could include their commute to work or thoughts on a film. The campaign backed by the national trust and English Heritage wants to create a mass weblog to record everyday life. October 17th was chosen as a normal weekday with no major anniversaries.

The Kate Moss Effect

16 10 2006

Kate Moss was pictured snorting cocaine last year, and lost several lucrative modelling contracts as a result. Moss made a come back a few months after the cocaine allegations. Today Moss makes more money than before the scandal.

I wrote a post yesterday about Kate Moss featuring in a series of ads for Agent Provocateur and was totally amazed to see that the number of hits on my page received an all times high!

Kate Moss vs. Burberry

Burberry’s distinctive beige check, once associated with A-listers, has now become the uniform of a rather different social group: the so-called Chav. The brand became something of a national joke when photos of former soap star Danniella Westbrook and her baby were splashed all over the papers. Both were dressed from head to toe in Burberry check. But just how does a top designer label shrug off a damaged image? Miss Moss might be able to help…

Kate Moss strips in latest raunchy Agent Provocateur film

15 10 2006

Kate Moss strips off to just her knickers in the latest in a series of ads for the Agent Provocateur underwear label. The film project is the latest result of an ongoing collaboration between Agent Provocateur and award winning director Mike Figgis, starring the unparalleled beauty - Kate Moss, in her first ever film role. There are 4 episodes entitled ‘The 4 Dreams of Miss X’ which will be released exclusively in their entirety on the Agent Provocateur website throughout the coming year. It will cost you £3 to download the ‘Exhibitionist’ video onto your mobile – easy money for Miss Moss and Agent Provocateur. Part 1 - Shadows can be viewed here

This short film however received mixed reactions:

Meanwhile, Burberry has become the latest fashion house to benefit from the Kate Moss effect, after sales of their luxury 800 pounds handbag - one she modelled for, have been soaring high. Burberry has revealed that the demand for the bag, which sold out just three weeks after it was launched in Britain this summer, was so high that a person has to join a waiting list to get hold of it! Well done Kate!
